an internship that opened doors for years to come
This student credits her InternBoston internship for jumpstarting her career.
When I was twenty years old, I was studying psychology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and was determined to refine my interests. I had a long-standing interest in disordered eating, but with no hands-on experience, I was unsure whether or not I would really be able to make it working with a notoriously difficult population. That summer I had my first experience interning at a non-profit that helps people with eating disorders find the most appropriate treatment to suit their needs.
I had many responsibilities, with researching articles and documentaries to add to their database and volunteering at information sessions at a local high school among my favorites. I was exposed to an abundance of new information. I learned about the less common disorders, the up-and-coming treatment approaches, and the diverse array of eating disorder presentations. I worked under smart, skillful clinicians through whose advice and connections I was able to find an internship at a local eating disorder clinic by my college.
I have since broadened my professional repertoire and have clinical and research experience in disordered eating and related issues. In every interview I have had since my internship, employers have commended my extensive experience and continued interest in my field. I credit that first internship with all my subsequent work, most recently, at a prestigious Boston area hospital. At age twenty-three and a recent college graduate, I look forward to pursuing a Ph.D in psychology with a concentration in eating disorders. My internship opened so many doors for me and I am so thankful to have confirmed my passion at such a young age.
